Coach interview – Wiktoria Rychlik

This week’s interview is with the lovely Coach Wiktoria …

  1. Who is your favourite professional player?

Roger Federer (pure, consistent strokes, perfect placement) -Dominica Cibulkova (she is never giving up, leaving her heart on the court every match she plays)

2. Why do you love tennis?

I love tennis because it’s unexpected, everything can happen on a tennis court, winning a match being 0:6 0:5 0:40 down as example (it did happen to me), meeting amazing people and working out full body; better than gym.

3. When did you start playing tennis?

I started when I was 3/4 years old. My father decided to send me on a tennis camp (I was the youngest participant and crying most of the time but at the end I started liking the sport) and that’s how it all started. I’ve been playing ever since, for whole my life as a player and as a coach.

4. List 3 things you like about Rackets Academy

Rackets Academy is an amazing place to work. Starting with helpful boss George, fantastic colleagues to amazing clients and kids. It’s never boring, always something going on in the Academy. Every day is different and interesting.

Rule of the Week – Ball Toss

The rules of tennis allow for as many ball tosses as a player needs to feel comfortable playing their serve. This means that it is just as legal to redo your toss ten times as it is to do it once.

Coach Mariano’s Tip of the Week: Doubles Serving Strategy: Australian Formation

“The Australian doubles formation is when the server and the net player both stand on the same side of the court, leaving an entire half of the court open.

Advantages: If the returner has a weak down the line return, this can be used to force them into that low percentage shot causing a lot of errors.

If you use this on the ad side, the server will have forehand groundstrokes (assuming they are right-handed).

Disadvantages: You are leaving an entire half of the court open. A hard down the line return could be a winner unless the server is very fast.

When to use it: There are two good times to use this formation;

1- When one of your opponents is hitting really strong crosscourt returns, and you’re losing most of those points. The Australian formation will force them to go down the line which is a more difficult return.

2- When the server feels much more comfortable hitting groundstrokes from one half of the court.

Give it a try in your next doubles match …Good luck!“

Marin Čilić signs long-term contract for HEAD apparel and footwear

HEAD, the global sports performance brand has signed a new long-term contract with 2014 US Open champion Marin ČILIĆ, extending the successful relationship into two new categories: Apparel and Footwear. ČILIĆ, who joined the HEAD Pro Player Team in 2008, decided to switch to the SPRINT PRO tennis shoe and the HEAD Sportswear PERFORMANCE LINE after a productive development process with the team at HEAD. “Both shoes and apparel are fantastic,” says Marin. “The Performance Line keeps its promise of delivering high functionality and athletic designs, while the Sprint Pro is incredibly flexible, yet also comfortable and stable. It is really all a tennis player can ask for.” Commenting on an increasingly competitive product portfolio available in all categories, HEAD CEO Johan Eliasch adds: “I am proud to extend the scope of our relationship with Marin.”
